Even with animals someone like Irwin knows real well, shit can still happen.

I'm willing to bet he was fairly knowledgable around stingrays.

I first read about this on my guitar board on Sunday night.

It was being reported on Austrailian TV and Radio, but I wondered if it was a hoax or a mis-report.

Got up on Monday and was sad to find out it was real. Very freak accident. Only 20 people in the last 100 years have been killed by a stingray. Drau and I have even swam with stingray down in Mexico.... I touched one on the back and it just took off faster than I could blink. Apparently they only sting out of self defense when they think they can't get away, and if he had been hit anywhere other than the heart, he would have lived.

my wife said she heard today that he and his photographer were filming in shallow water and he swam over the top of the ray and they believe the ray felt trapped by both of them and just pushed its barb up. Irwin immediately pulled the stinger which caused him to die instantly. also was said that if he would have left it in and got to ER he might have lived as the barb would have tamponaded the hole keeping it from bleeding out.

It's a shame, as nutty as I thought he was at times, I liked what he did and the causes he believed in.

    Cool

I don't believe the barb detaches from the ray so I doubt keeping it imbedded would have been an option.
